Safety Learning for a Rapidly Growing EdTech Company
Overview
I was contracted to manage the design and development of accredited safety materials that Monologix, a fast-growing EdTech firm, was looking to complete in accordance with the State of Maine’s recreation department.
This included the end-to-end creation of their boating safety manual as well as the initial prototypes and designs for their firearm safety self-paced eLearning course.

Project 1: Boating Safety Manual for State of Maine
This project contained original written curriculum for an accredited boating safety course for individuals obtaining their boating license in the state of Maine. The bulk of the learning content I delivered covered the rules and regulations of boating in Maine waters, as well as best practices for beginner and intermediate-level boaters.
It was important that learners could have an accessible solution that they could easily access via an online portal, and both read and download onto their personal devices as they were preparing for boating exams.

The overall structure of the manual had been utilized by the company previously, but I led the design tailored to the state of Maine and conducted state-specific research before crafting all of the instructional content for this solution. The primary deliverable went through numerous rounds of revisions from several levels of key stakeholders and SMEs. Ultimately, all the copy and visuals were approved and sent for publishing and distribution within 3 weeks of the project's start date.
The safety and procedures manual for boating in the state of Maine contains technical information regarding boating laws, safety best practices, and boating techniques. The practical application of these concepts is displayed through easy-to-read text and labeled graphics.

As an educational experience, this type of manual works to give audiences a comprehensive guide on the topics, as well as provide a just-in-time resource for those looking to go boating in the waters off the Maine coast.

Project 2: Firearm Safety for Northeast U.S. Constitutional Carry States
This interactive course was on the fundamental knowledge and responsibilities of owning and carrying a firearm. This demo was developed as part of a proposal of work and included course prototypes and a detailed description of the course features.
The user demographic we identified included people between the ages of 25-40, that either own or are interested in owning a firearm. With little to no prior experience with firearms, they have limited knowledge of real-world implications of the concepts the course covers.

To demonstrate the importance of the training material, the course was designed in a way that gave learners just “one life” to perform important actions. Interactivity was included in the form of scenario-based lessons, drag and drop interactions, quizzing features, and pop-up boxes for instant feedback.
The prototype included scenario-based learning with guidance that educated users on best practices and the real-world consequences of their actions. For this course, this ranged from using incorrect ammunition, forgetting to look beyond the target when shooting, and storing your firearm in an unsafe way. An example of this can be seen in the visual storyboard, as at one point the learner must navigate real-life scenarios independently.
When looking closely at the parts of a firearm, there were hot spots for the bolt, pump, and lever for the user to click and find out more information about each part. This allowed for interaction, visual cues, and reinforcement of learning. Then, if there was more to explain there was the option for the user to click on different tabs on the screen to find out about the different types.
